Is an Australian Shepherd right for you?

Australian Shepherds (which were actually developed in the American West) combine working-dog drive with deep loyalty to their family. They're stunning dogs — merle coats and blue eyes — and that has put many Aussies in homes that weren't ready for their energy.

Aussies are velcro dogs: they want to be with you, doing something, all the time. Given enough exercise and training they're wonderful family companions; left bored in a backyard they become barkers, diggers, and escape artists.

Best for: Active families, runners and hikers, dog-sport homes, owners who want a devoted shadow.

Think twice if: You're away from home most of the day, want an independent dog, or picked the breed mainly for the coat color.

• Wary of strangers; early socialization is essential
• High herding drive — may nip heels of running children
• Excels at agility, frisbee, and obedience
• Vocal — many Aussies bark to express opinions
• Needs mental work as much as physical exercise

Exercise & Training

Give an Aussie 60–90 minutes of real activity daily plus training games. They're built for all-day ranch work, so a quick walk doesn't register. Frisbee, agility, trail running, and herding balls are Aussie favorites. Teach a solid recall early — their chase instinct is strong.

Grooming

Brush the medium-length double coat twice weekly to prevent mats in the feathering and britches; daily during spring and fall coat blows. Never shave an Aussie — the double coat insulates against heat and sun. Bathe every 6–8 weeks, nails monthly.

Health & Lifespan

• Average lifespan: 12–15 years
• Common issues: hip dysplasia, epilepsy, cataracts, MDR1 drug sensitivity (test available)
• Merle-to-merle breedings can produce deaf/blind puppies — ask the breeder
• Generally robust with responsible breeding
