The Bichon Frise is professionally cheerful — a small, sturdy puff of optimism that adores people and assumes everyone it meets feels the same. They're one of the best choices for allergy-prone households wanting a small dog, and among the longest-lived breeds.

Like the Poodle, the no-shed coat is a maintenance contract: daily brushing and professional grooming every 4–6 weeks, forever. Bichons also genuinely hate solitude — this is a companion breed that needs companions.

Best for: Allergy households, apartments, seniors, families with gentle kids, retirees or remote workers home most of the day.

Think twice if: The dog would be alone 8+ hours daily, grooming costs strain the budget, or housetraining patience is short — small breeds take longer.

Exercise & Training

30–45 minutes daily of walks and play covers a Bichon, plus indoor zoomies they schedule themselves. They're sturdier than they look and enjoy real walks. Mental games and trick training delight them — Bichons were circus performers historically and it shows.

Grooming

Daily brushing to the skin prevents the soft, curly coat from matting; professional grooming every 4–6 weeks maintains the cut. Watch tear staining: wipe daily and keep face hair trimmed. Like Poodles, ear-canal hair needs attention. White coats show everything; baths every 3–4 weeks.
