Is a Border Collie right for you?

Border Collies are widely considered the most intelligent dog breed on earth. Bred to herd sheep with laser focus for hours, they bring that same intensity to everything — which is magnificent in the right home and exhausting in the wrong one.

This is not a 'walk around the block' dog. Border Collies need physical exercise AND mental work every single day: agility, herding, trick training, puzzle toys. Without a job, they invent one — usually herding children, chasing cars, or redesigning your furniture.

Best for: Very active owners, dog-sport enthusiasts, rural homes or homes with big yards, experienced owners who enjoy training.

Think twice if: You work long hours, want a relaxed companion, have toddlers (herding nips are common), or this is your first dog.

Temperament & Personality

• Frighteningly smart — learns new commands in minutes
• Intense work ethic and focus; happiest with a task
• Can be reserved with strangers; loyal to their person
• Strong herding instinct — may chase and nip at moving things
• Sensitive to tone; harsh corrections backfire
• Prone to obsessive behaviors (shadow-chasing, light fixation) when bored

Exercise & Training

Plan on 90+ minutes daily, split between hard physical exercise and mental work. Fetch is fine; agility, herding trials, scent work, or advanced trick training is better. A Border Collie that gets only physical exercise becomes a fitter, faster problem. Ten minutes of focused training tires them more than an hour of running.

Grooming

The weather-resistant double coat needs brushing twice a week, more during seasonal shedding. Rough coats mat behind the ears and in the feathering. Bathe only when dirty — over-bathing strips the coat's natural oils. Nails monthly, ears and teeth weekly.

Health & Lifespan

• Average lifespan: 12–15 years
• Common issues: hip dysplasia, collie eye anomaly, epilepsy, MDR1 drug sensitivity
• Ask breeders for hip scores and eye test results
• Generally a hardy, long-lived working breed
