Is a Boxer right for you?

Boxers are the peter pans of dogdom — athletic, goofy, and playful well into old age. They're famously patient with children (sturdy enough for rough play, gentle enough to tolerate it) and protective of family without being unmanageable.

A Boxer is a lot of dog for the first two years: bouncy, mouthy, and convinced they're a lap dog at 65 pounds. Consistent training channels that joy. Their shortened muzzle also means watching heat, though far less extreme than bulldogs.

Best for: Active families with kids, owners who want a playful guardian, people who find dog goofiness charming rather than chaotic.

Think twice if: You want a calm, dignified dog, can't handle two years of enthusiastic adolescence, or live somewhere very hot.

• Alert watchdog; reserved with strangers, devoted to family
• The famous 'kidney bean' wiggle and paw-boxing play style
• Mouthy as youngsters; teach bite inhibition early

Exercise & Training

An hour-plus daily of walks, fetch, and play. Boxers love games with their people over solo activities. Mind the brachycephalic-lite muzzle: limit hard exercise in heat and humidity. Jumping and zoomies are breed standard — a fenced yard helps.

Grooming

One of the easiest coats: weekly once-over with a rubber mitt, occasional baths, monthly nails. They shed lightly but steadily. Some drool, especially after drinking. Clean facial wrinkles occasionally and check ears weekly.

Health & Lifespan

• Average lifespan: 10–12 years
• The breed's burden: cancer (mast cell, lymphoma) and heart conditions (boxer cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis)
• Also: hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, bloat
• Choose breeders who do cardiac testing (echo/Holter) on parents
