Is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel right for you?

If you designed the perfect companion dog from scratch, you'd end up close to a Cavalier: small but not fragile, gentle with everyone, equally happy hiking or napping, and almost incapable of aggression. They're the most recommendable breed for first-time owners who want pure companionship.

Cavaliers mirror your energy — active with active owners, mellow with homebodies. Their one great weakness is their heart, literally: mitral valve disease is widespread in the breed, making breeder choice unusually important.

Best for: First-time owners, families with kids, seniors, apartments or houses, therapy-dog work, anyone wanting an affectionate shadow.

Think twice if: You're away long hours (they hate solitude), want a watchdog, or aren't prepared for potential cardiac vet costs in later years.

Exercise & Training

A Cavalier is content with 30–40 minutes of daily walks plus play, but happily does more. They're surprisingly game little hikers. Keep them leashed or fenced — the spaniel chase instinct overrides recall when a squirrel runs.

Grooming

Brush the silky coat 2–3 times weekly, paying attention to the feathering on ears, legs, and tail where mats form. No trimming required — the coat is meant to be natural. Clean those long ears weekly; the hanging shape traps moisture and invites infections.

Health & Lifespan

• Average lifespan: 10–14 years
• The big one: mitral valve disease — over half of Cavaliers have a murmur by age 5
