Is a Golden Retriever right for you?

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular family dogs in the US — and for good reason. They're patient, gentle, and eager to please, which makes them easy to train even for first-time dog owners.

They need significant daily exercise (45–60 minutes minimum) and thrive with an active family. If you work from home or have kids who love outdoor play, a Golden is a natural fit.

Best for: Active families, first-time owners, homes with children, people who want a trainable and affectionate companion.

Think twice if: You're rarely home, live in a very small space with no outdoor access, or have severe allergies — Goldens shed heavily.

Temperament & Personality

• Friendly with strangers, children, and other animals
• Highly intelligent — excel at obedience, agility, and therapy work
• Very playful well into adulthood
• Can develop separation anxiety if left alone too long
• Love water — swimming is a natural instinct

Exercise & Training

Goldens need at least 60 minutes of exercise daily — walks, fetch, swimming, or hiking. Without it they can become destructive or anxious. They respond extremely well to positive reinforcement training. Start basic commands (sit, stay, come, leave it) in the first week home.

Grooming

Golden Retrievers have a dense double coat that sheds year-round and heavily twice a year. Brush 2–3 times per week minimum with an undercoat rake or slicker brush. Bathe every 4–6 weeks. Trim nails monthly and clean ears weekly to prevent infections.

Health & Lifespan

• Average lifespan: 10–12 years
• Common issues: hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, heart disease, cancer (higher rate than most breeds)
• Feed large breed formula to support joint health
• Regular vet checkups and hip/elbow screenings recommended
