Is a Labrador Retriever right for you?

The Labrador Retriever has topped America's most-popular-breed lists for decades. Labs are famously good-natured — outgoing with strangers, patient with kids, and endlessly enthusiastic about food, fetch, and whatever you're doing right now.

They're high-energy working dogs at heart. A young Lab needs a solid hour of real exercise daily, and field-line Labs need even more. A bored Lab is a chewing, counter-surfing Lab.

Best for: Active families, first-time owners willing to exercise daily, hunting/outdoor companions, homes with kids.

Think twice if: You want a calm apartment dog, can't commit to daily exercise, or mind constant shedding and a dog that never outgrows puppy enthusiasm.

Temperament & Personality

• Friendly with everyone — people, dogs, cats, mail carriers
• Highly food-motivated, which makes training easy (and weight gain easy too)
• Playful and puppy-like well past age three
• Natural swimmers and retrievers
• Can be mouthy and exuberant without early training
• Prone to separation anxiety if under-exercised and left alone

Exercise & Training

Labs need 60+ minutes of genuine exercise daily — fetch, swimming, jogging, or field work. Walks alone usually aren't enough for a young Lab. They're exceptionally trainable with positive reinforcement and food rewards; start impulse-control work (sit, wait, leave it) early because an untrained 70 lb Lab is a freight train.

Grooming

The short double coat sheds far more than people expect — year-round, with two heavy seasonal blows. Weekly brushing (daily during shedding season) with a rubber curry or deshedding tool keeps it manageable. Bathe every 4–6 weeks. Check ears weekly; Labs love water and are prone to ear infections.

Health & Lifespan

• Average lifespan: 11–13 years
• Common issues: hip and elbow dysplasia, obesity, ear infections, ACL tears
• Watch their weight — most Labs will eat themselves round if allowed
• Large breed formula and joint supplements recommended from adulthood
