Is a Pug right for you?

The Pug motto is 'multum in parvo' — a lot of dog in a small space — and it's accurate. Pugs are sturdy little comedians who live to be with people. They're great with kids, fine in apartments, and have charmed their way from Chinese emperors' laps to yours.

Like all flat-faced breeds, Pugs come with caveats: heat intolerance, breathing issues, eye injuries, and a coat that sheds far more than its length suggests. They're also champion eaters — Pug obesity is epidemic and shortens lives.

Best for: Apartment living, families with kids, seniors, first-time owners, people home often who want a constant, funny companion.

Think twice if: You want an athletic dog, live in heat without AC, mind heavy shedding and snoring, or won't enforce a strict diet.

Temperament & Personality

• Sociable with everyone — people, dogs, cats, kids
• Playful and clownish; loves an audience
• Even-tempered; very rarely snappy
• Food-obsessed (useful for training, dangerous for waistlines)
• Snores, snorts, and breathes audibly — it's part of the package
• Velcro dog; wants to be wherever you are

Exercise & Training

Two 15–20 minute walks plus play sessions is the Pug sweet spot. Strictly avoid heat and humidity — Pugs overheat fast and can't pant efficiently. Indoor play and short training games keep weight off when weather won't cooperate. Most Pugs can't swim well; supervise around water.

Grooming

That short coat sheds shockingly — daily during seasons, weekly brushing minimum with a rubber curry. Clean the nose wrinkle 2–3 times weekly and dry it. Watch the prominent eyes: they're easily scratched and prone to ulcers. Wipe ears weekly, nails monthly.

Health & Lifespan

• Average lifespan: 13–15 years
• Common issues: brachycephalic airway syndrome, eye injuries/ulcers, obesity, skin fold infections, PDE (breed-specific encephalitis, rare)
• Weight control is the single biggest thing an owner controls
• Choose breeders who prioritize breathing and eye health
