Is a Vizsla right for you?

The Vizsla is a Hungarian pointer built for all-day hunting — a sleek, rust-gold athlete that has become famous as the ultimate 'velcro dog.' Vizslas bond intensely with their people and genuinely suffer when excluded from family life.

They're a dream for active owners: gentle, biddable, and quiet indoors once exercised. The catch is the 'once exercised' part — a Vizsla needs to RUN, not stroll, nearly every day.

Best for: Runners and cyclists, hunters, active couples and families, owners home most of the day.

Think twice if: You're gone 9+ hours a day, dislike a dog touching you at all times, or can't provide hard daily exercise — an under-exercised Vizsla is anxious and destructive.

Temperament & Personality

• Extremely affectionate — will be in your lap, regardless of size
• Sensitive soul; responds to gentle, positive training only
• Quiet and calm indoors when exercise needs are met
• Strong pointing/retrieving instinct; loves field work
• Prone to separation anxiety more than most breeds
• Good with kids and generally good with other dogs

Exercise & Training

Vizslas need 60–120 minutes of vigorous exercise daily — running, fetch sprints, swimming, or field training. They make outstanding running partners (wait until 18 months for long distances). Combine with training or scent games; a tired Vizsla is the world's most pleasant housemate.

Grooming

About as low-maintenance as coats get: a short, self-cleaning coat with no undercoat. Weekly rubdown with a rubber grooming mitt, occasional baths, monthly nails. They have little body fat and no undercoat — they feel the cold, so a winter coat is genuinely useful, not a fashion statement.

Health & Lifespan

• Average lifespan: 12–14 years
• Common issues: hip dysplasia, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, some cancers
• Lean, athletic breed — keep them that way
• Thin coat means sunburn risk in summer, chills in winter
